gossip girl hits manila

There is truth to the saying that hell hath seen no fury than that of women scorned. Whether it be a righteous sense of anger or a desire to inflict as much pain as they have received, they find the strength and the willpower to wreak as much havoc as they can into the lives of their exes–and, since the target of their wrath are former lovers, they know to hit where it really counts.

So what do you do if your ex, a Manila man-about-town who is a permanent fixture in the society pages, tramples you, crushes you, and unceremoniously leaves you, broken, bruised, beaten and broke?

You strike back.

There is also truth to the saying that the pen is mightier than the sword. In this modern age, something is even stronger than the proverbial pen: a keyboard. With a single stroke, you can reach millions of people all over the world in seconds and tarnish the silver spoon your ex was born with.

That’s what one blogger is doing now. It’s like a real-life version of Gossip Girl, except the protagonist (the term is relative) is not a biological girl. He is an HIV-positive Australian who met a Filipino who stole not only his heart but $70,000 of his savings as well. Since the Pinoy refuses to acknowledge his repeated entreaties to return the money, the Aussie has resorted to putting up a blog which promises to list all the secrets of his ex and his high-flying friends until he pays back.

It’s actually an addictive read–aside from an interesting topic, he writes quite well. What surprised me, though, wasn’t the cocaine-snorting socialites he exposed, nor his threat to expose a tale involving murder, incest and drink-spiking. No, it doesn’t surprise me that the wealthy and the spoiled do drugs and believe that the world revolves around them. No, it doesn’t surprise me that these educated, elite people might be capable of murder and that they can get away with it. Power makes you invincible, at least in this part of the world.

What surprises me is that people can be so greedy. How one can have everything but still want more.

What surprises me is that people can be so vicious. The comments to his posts were even more vitriolic than his entries! In his entry about a portly socialite whom he saw in a bikini, one reader begged him to post the picture to cause maximum embarrassment.  One asked him to dish more dirt because it wasn’t destructive enough. Another said he was disappointed because he didn’t divulge anything out of the ordinary.

My goodness! What could possibly cause such a desire to bear witness to and even encourage someone’s downfall? Where does such hatred stem from?

I am disturbed.
